How to reduce the number of images displayed in a book?

If there are media items that you wish to "include" or "exclude" in your book Family Book Creator (FBC) provides a function to mark them appropriately.

The FBC "Filter by media categories" filters allow you to control, which media items from your Family Tree Maker (FTM) file are included or excluded in a book. If a media item is assigned a media category found in the Include filter, this item will be shown in the book’s Photo Album section. If a media item is assigned a media category found in the Exclude filter, this element will be excluded from the book’s Photo Album section. IMPORTANT: Include filters are applied after exclude filters.

Note: A media item can have multiple media categories applied to it in FTM. For more information please read 'Why and how do I categorise media items in FTM?'.

If you apply an Exclude Filter to a media item that is assigned one or more media categories in FTM, the media item will not be included anywhere in the book. If you do not apply an Exclude Filter, the media item will be included, if the item is linked directly or indirectly (via a source citation) to an individual who has a family section in the book. Multiple media categories may be selected in the Exclude Filter to determine what media items will be excluded from the book.

For example you may want to exclude all images assigned the media categories in FTM of "Headstone", "Graveyard" and "Cemetery." Sample Exclude Filter

If you apply an Include Filter to a media item that is assigned one or more media categories in FTM, the media item will always be included in the book, but only if it is linked directly or indirectly (via a source citation) to an individual who has a family section in the book.

Which filter should I use? You may prefer to only specify those images, that you do not want included in the book, because you want most of your images to be included by default. Using this technique, only a few images need to be marked, as not to be included in the book in the Exclude Filter section of FBC.

Note: Media items are able to be marked as "Private", in the edit panel of the Media Detail dialog box in FTM, this will exclude the media item from your book. If a media item is not appearing in your book, check that the "Private" box in FTM is not ticked and that the image file is available on your disk.
